For the second time in just under 18 months Southampton have managed to lose 9-0 in the Premier League, this time at the hands of Manchester United.

  • The Saints were already struggling with form and injuries, and their actions on Tuesday night did little to help themselves.

Highlights as Southampton lose 9-0 again

Young Swiss midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz, effectively killed the match as a contest when he managed to get himself sent off after just 70 seconds.

His reckless tackle on Scott McTominay left referee Mike Dean no real choice other than to brandish a red card. And from then on in, it was damage limitation for the Saints!

Unfortunately for Southampton and Hasenhuttl, they could limit the damage, as Manchester United racked up 9 goals. Including 3 in the final few minutes, after a second Saints player, Jan Bednarek, also saw red in the 87th minute.

In fairness, Bednarek's red card was a lot unluckier than the one received by Jankewitz.

But it from Bennarek's perspective, it topped off an awful night for him that also seen his score an own goal.

"Yes it hurts. It hurts me the most, but I cannot change it any more - it's happened."

    What now for the Saints?

Depending on how you look at things, this could actually be a worse situation for the Saints than the first time.

First up, obviously it's nothing to be proud of on your CV from Ralph Hasenhuttl's point of view.

If there is ever a borderline decision over whether the manager keeps his job, or when/if he's looking to land a new job in the future, having two 9-0 defeats on his record won't help his cause.

Secondly, the Saints are in a bad run of form now, and they have a hell of a lot of injuries. Added to that, they now have two players out suspended.

But on the flip side, back in 2019, Southampton looked nailed on for relegation after the 9-0 defeat to Leicester.

They were in the middle of the relegation dog fight back in 2019, albeit with time to get out. This time the Saints have no such issues.

Southampton are a huge 15 points clear of the drop zone, and probably only really need another 10-11 points from their remaining 17 matches.

And that's the worst case scenario.

I don't think even the Saints most pessimistic fans see them going down.

Southampton will bounce back again - Just like in 2019

They are in a bad place though, and it will be a slow process rebuilding confidence.

When this happened back in 2019, there was an immediate reaction from the players.

Straight away there was a spirited performance away at Man City, and with it, it was clear to see the players were still with the manager.

Results might not come straight away, as they didn't in 2019. But if the Saints manager, board, players and fans all keep calm, I believe they will have no problem turning things around.

They have an excellent manager in Ralph Hasenhuttl. A man who was lorded just a few weeks ago after beating Liverpool 1-0.

And Southampton also have an excellent team. It's more a case of when they turn it around, rather than if they will turn it around!
